Being an unwanted twin in the Imperial line of succession, Farilane became a scholar, adventurer, and in a time when reading was once more forbidden—a book hunter. Her singular obsession is finding the mythical Book of Brin, a tome not just lost but intentionally buried. Respected and beloved by the Teshlor Knights, not even their legendary skills can protect her for what she finds is more dangerous than what she sought. From the three-time New York Times best-selling author Michael J. Sullivan, Farilane is the second novel in the Rise and Fall trilogy. This latest set of stories sits snugly between Legends of the First Empire and the Riyria books (Revelations and Chronicles). With this tale, Michael continues his tradition of unlikely heroes who must rise to the call when history knocks, demanding to be let in. This series will conclude in the summer of 2023 with the release of Esrahaddon, the final piece in a narrative that began in 2008 and contains 19 full-length novels spread across four series.I loved this book!!! Farilane is an excellent character and the story was one of his best. I kept bouncing up to my bookcase and checking various other books of Michael’s to see about the sequence of events. I can’t wait to get my hardback and reread this book. This will be wordy but I have been a longtime fan of Michael’s books so please read.In the afterward, Robin says this “might be the book that ends his career” .. I totally agree, but NOT because of the ending. I have no problem with the ending, in fact by the mid point of the book I was hoping for it. The problem was the incessant inner dialogue of Farilane that had me for the first time screaming at my beloved Timmy! I felt so sorry for TGR, how did he manage page after page of her assumptions about every person she met (just bloody ask them!) and dissecting every action taken by her or someone else. How could someone 200 years old still act like a child or someone who is so smart be so clueless to signs of her own danger? I have been a loyal reader of this author since his very 1st RIYRIA book. I even corresponded with him back in 2011 by email about the delay of Percepliquis and the Orbit acquisition which delayed its release. That’s how invested I was in his writing. But something has gone wrong, I don’t know how or why but I don’t think I can read another book that is so far removed from the quality with which he started his “career”. I admit I wasn’t a fan of the last book, but as I said I am invested in this story so jumped on this as soon as it came out. But, I truly believe if not for TGR I doubt I would have finished this book. The beginning was slow to me, and it took me a few chapters to start to get into the story. Overall I feel the story was a good one, but also feel like it was unfair in the end to Farilane. I understand the reasoning behind what happened, but she was a great character and deserved a better life with someone who would actually love her.
